While I was fumbling through the many financial magazines we receive, I read something that really made me stop and think.

Someone had asked the Dalai Lama what had surprised him most in life. He replied, “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future. He lives as if he is never going to die, and then he dies having never really lived.”

Will this be your story?

I encourage you to visit our on-line learning center and read “Regrets” under Life and Retirement Planning. This doesn’t have to be your story, but without careful attention it will easily turn out that way.

In fact, it is never too late in the year to set New Year’s Resolutions. It has always fascinated me how much the dieting and fitness industries make in January each year. I, myself, am a victim of the vast amount of infomercials for these industries early in the year. The sad thing is that most of us set these resolutions and don’t even make it out of January before we go back to our old habits.

This got me to thinking, “Why is that? Why do we fail so easily?” Then it came to me that we fail because we don’t truly connect the big picture of the resolution with the real importance that applies to our own real-life situation. Instead, we set these BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) that often aren’t realistic and lack stepping stone goals that we can reach along the way. Hence, we feel we aren’t really making that big of a difference so we give up a little at a time and ultimately fail.

So, how do we stop this?

Well, let me start by asking you a question. If we are sitting here 5 years from today looking back over the last 5 years, what regrets might you have that would be absolutely unacceptable?

Think about this question in regard to your health, family, friends, faith, business or career, philanthropic efforts, using your strengths, etc.

In July of 2010, not January, we wrote an article on this concept to help you set your life goals and create a sort of bucket list. I encourage you to read it: http://kennedy-financial.com/learning-center/2010/07/regrets/

Then, if you are feeling really courageous rephrase this question a little: If we are sitting here 10 years from today, 15, 20, 30 or at the end of your life.

Pronouncing the unacceptable regrets you have will inevitably give you charge to set your Resolutions on a realistic level and connect you with that Big Picture when things get tough and you are ready to give up.

Our wishes for you are a joyful New Year filled with accomplishment for the things you value most in you life!

Wow! What an incredible week! This is the first year we celebrated Christmas time with two outstanding parties to say thank you to those individuals and families we work with. Tuesday night we were in downtown Ft Worth at Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Thursday we traveled to the big country and partied down at Abilene Country Club. Both parties were come and go events with beautiful music, great wine and tasty hors doevres. To continue an annual tradition, everyone was encouraged to bring a gift for Toys for Tots. And we are happy to announce that this year there were more toys than ever before. Thanks to Dr. Galley, Bob Kuykendall and Chris McCormick we will have pictures up soon under “Events” on our website.

We hope to see you next year! Have a blessed and very Merry Christmas!

We just wanted to reach out to you to say that we missed you at the Entrepreneurial Bash in New York on October 4th. The bash was inspired by the book How they Did It: Billion Dollar Insights from the Heart of America by Robert Jordan. The book, and accordingly the bash, included billion dollar insights from entrepreneurs across America . We would like to share with you the major take-aways we attained from this event.

The Top 10 things every business owner should know:

1. Hire someone smarter than you.

2. Follow a trend and the world will push you along.

3. Value the value you create.

4. Done beats perfect every time.

5. Failure is a key component to success.

6. Be innovative when things go wrong.

7. Fall in love with your clients, not your processes.

8. Destroy your company before someone else does.

9. It is personal!

10. Be tough on your staff or your customers will be tougher on you when they leave.

Again, we wish you could have been with us! It was a wonderful experience to be able to converse with some of today’s biggest self-made successes. The insight that we gained from this event is priceless, and we am excited to share this information with you.
